Get that job!
Getting an interview brings you one step closer to that job you've set your heart on. But the interview itself can be a daunting experience. So here's some simple advice to help calm those nerves and ensure that you're properly prepared.
An interview is a two-way process. The employer will obviously be looking for certain criteria relating to you and your experience in order to assess your suitability for the job. But by the same token, it's an opportunity for you to make sure that the job is right for you. It's natural to be nervous before an interview but try to remain calm.
Preparing for the interview
- Do your homework. Learn all you can about the company and the job for which you are being interviewed. Use the internet to find out recent pitch wins, high profile campaigns, awards, etc.
- Think about the skills you have and how they can be applied. Think creatively and always demonstrate how these can benefit your future employer!
- You may be asked to describe yourself. Think through how you would answer such a question to present yourself in a favourable (but always genuine) light
- Prepare some questions for the interviewer. There are bound to be areas where you will want some clarification
At the interview
First impressions are lasting, so check your route and make sure you arrive on time. Ensure you are dressed appropriately and be confident (but not overbearing).
- Try to answer questions directly without waffling off the point. If you can't answer a question ask for clarification or for the question to be paraphrased; alternatively ask to come back to it later
- Be friendly and sincere but be careful not to be over-familiar
- This is your chance to shine, so be positive and enthusiastic. Try not to get carried away, but an interview is no place for shrinking violets. Enthusiasm is really important
- Don’t be afraid of silence. Use it to compose your own answers to questions. And let your interviewer use it in the same way
- No matter how you feel the interview goes, end it on a positive note with a ‘Thank you’ and a smile
